The explosion in popularity of the Internet over the last decade has opened up a whole new world of options for shoe shopping, providing customers with a bewildering array of options that no physical store could ever hope to match.

The explosion in popularity of the Internet over the last decade has opened up a whole new world of options for shoe shopping, providing customers with a bewildering array of options that no physical store could ever hope to match. Almost any style, size and color you could imagine can now be bought at the click of a mouse, with no queues, no stock shortages and no unhelpful sales staff.

Of course it’s not all positive. Like most aspects of online shopping, buying shoes online can be a double edged sword, and what we gain in convenience we often lose in other ways. So, before you start entering your credit card details let’s look at the pros and cons of buying those strappy summer heels online.

Some of the Pros

1. You beat the crowds

One of the most trying aspects of shopping has always been the need to fight through the crowds, a problem that only gets worse during the holiday season and in the sales. Hundreds of people trying to fit into a space designed for 50 can put a serious damper on the experience, and you often find yourself wanting to escape before you’ve had the chance to properly browse.

Online, however, it’s just you and your computer screen. You can browse the stores at your leisure, mixing and matching colors and styles until you’ve found a pair of shoes perfect for you.

2. Lots more sizes

There’s nothing worse than hunting for an hour for the perfect pair, only to be told that the shop doesn’t have them in your size. When shopping online this isn’t a problem. Stock lists are displayed front and center when you land on a product page, so you’ll know if your size is in stock before allowing yourself to fall in love.

3. Sales every day

Of course the main advantage to buying online is that the prices are usually much lower. Without the large overhead of store rental, staff wages and every other little cost needed to keep the lights on in a brick and mortar store, buying shoes online can offer great discounts.

What’s more, in the rush to grab their share of the online shopping market many sites offer huge discounts every day. When customers can leave the store with the click of a mouse, vendors are much more desperate to convince them to stay with low, low prices.

Some of the Cons

1. No try before you buy

While the size may be right, perhaps the fit is a little wrong. The biggest disadvantage to online shopping is that you don’t get to try on your shoes before you buy them. While this isn’t as big a problem with footwear as it is with clothing, it’s always possible for a pair of shoes to arrive only for you to find that it doesn’t fit quite right.

2. Waiting for delivery

Finally, when shopping online you miss out on one of the most enjoyable aspects of shopping: returning home with a fistful of bags and that warm, satisfied feeling that comes with a day of great shopping.

When buying online you miss out on that immediate rush of excitement. Instead you often have to wait several days for delivery, and while that’s usually not too much of a trial it can be a little frustrating.

All in all, though, the benefits of buying shoes online far outweigh the disadvantages. We sacrifice a little, but we gain a lot more, and at the end of the day it’s hard to argue that the bargains aren’t worth it!

The way you view yourself has a lot to do with your personality. If you think you're too fat or thin, your face doesn't look right, you're too short or tall, or you aren't strong enough, you have a negative body image

Harm Caused By A Negative Perception

The way you view yourself has a lot to do with your personality. If you think you’re too fat or thin, your face doesn’t look right, you’re too short or tall, or you aren’t strong enough, you have a negative body image. When someone is subconscious of themselves it leads to low self-esteem. This causes a person to lose confidence, become shy, or irritable towards others and make socializing a real challenge. It is also unhealthy to view oneself negatively. A negative view can lead to depression and cause undue stress on the body. The pressure of regular stress can weaken the body in numerous ways. One area affected is the heart. Too much stress on the heart can lead to heart failure.

Drugs and Alcohol

Depression from having a negative body image can become so great that some turn to drugs and alcohol for relief. However, drug abuse can make the situation worse and become a self-fulfilling cycle. Drugs are no fix for any problem, by the time the short term high wears off you’re just left feeling worse than before.

Unhealthy Diets

Some who think they’re over weight will try diets that starve the body almost completely of any kind of nourishment for fear of calories. This is done most commonly in two ways; eating practically nothing at all and secondly by binging or overloading on food and then purging or vomiting it all up. Both these diets are very unhealthy and life threatening. Try to keep to a strict routine of 3 meals and day without snacking in between.

Effects of Unhealthy Dieting

Obscure or fad diets cause the body to slowly shut down and struggle to survive. This struggle can become extremely uncomfortable, intense/constant stomach pain, light-headedness, and swollen joints are only a few of the physical discomforts. Anyone who continues unhealthy eating habits like these will shorten their life span considerably.

What Influences a Negative Body Image

The media is the biggest influencer for a negative body image. Television and magazines boast are models and celebrities with the picture perfect body. Because of this, teenagers who are particularly susceptible believe that they have to be just like their favourite celebrity to be accepted. Furthermore, often some of these celebrities are not in a healthy state themselves.

Appreciate Yourself As Is

Some people believe that if they could only change this or that they would be happy. The truth is, if they don’t accept themselves as they are, they may never accept themselves no matter how many changes are made. This makes the number 1 step to improving your body image and self-esteem appreciating who you already are and what you already have; learn to see the positives. Just being a good person and knowing that friends and family love you is something to be pleased about. Remember, looks aren’t everything, attitude and personality are. When anyone is selfish and treats others disrespectful, people find everything about them irritating, no matter how beautiful they are on the surface.

Set Healthy Goals and Make Healthy Changes

There is nothing wrong with making healthy changes to reach healthy goals. If you feel that you would like to be a healthier weight and/or get more fit, changes can be made in your diet and you should try to exercise regularly. Diet and exercise are key to muscle growth too, if looking to build strength. Only a very few people can be healthy at just 44kg(95lbs) or even 48kg(105lbs), this is basically because a person’s height determines their weight. The taller someone is, the more they need to weigh and vice versa.

To be sure you have a healthy weight goal in mind consult your doctor. Your doctor can also give information on diet choices and how strenuous of an exercise to start with. Lastly, get support from people that care about you and work hard at achieving your goal. Be prepared for ups and downs. Don’t expect to reach your goal fast. Be prepared for the long run and it won’t crush your spirit if it takes some time. And be proud of every little achievement you make. Each one puts you one step closer to reaching your goal.

Travelling abroad is great fun but unshredded helps you get the most out of drinking abroad.

If you’re looking for things to do abroad, and/or are looking for ways to enjoy beer, then drinking beer abroad is ideal as a way to get more out of your travels and to sample beer in a different way and a different land. Here we will look at some of the many great reasons to try the local brew.

The Unique Experience

First of all, you will get to sample a new kind of beer that is a part of the culture and the country you are visiting. The great news here is that beer is unique to the place you drink it in. Beer is made from local water and local hops and if you drink it in one country it will taste different to that made in other countries. This way you are able to sample something that is specific to the place you’re visiting and you try something that you won’t always have the opportunity to try. It will also make you a more experienced beer drinker and will allow you to allude to ‘that time’ you were drinking beer in that country – giving you an air of mystery and culture.

Some of these new beers as well are going to be really nice. Of course some will let you down and drink like cat urine… but there will be occasions when you try a beer and are very pleasantly surprised. It’s worth drinking a few duff ones (there’s a Simpsons pun there somewhere) in order to get to the diamonds in the rough. And even the ones you don’t enjoy will count as interesting experiences.

Even if you have tried the beer already in your own country (many of the best beers are imported) then you benefit from trying them in their own country where they will taste much better as a result of not being transported. Transporting beers can really alter their taste and normally this is not for the better.

It Adds to the Holiday

At the same time if you are drinking beer on holiday then you will find that you get more out of whatever you are doing as a result. If you are trying to meet new people then this is an ideal way to get talking to people in bars as it serves as a social lubricant and gives you something to talk about (ask if they can recommend you a beer). Alternatively if you’re relaxing in your resort then this can help you to feel more chilled and laid back (beer has that effect), or if you are sitting watching a sunset on a mountainside then a cold can or bottle can perfectly compliment that. Whatever your situation, drinking some of the local beer can help you to make it an even more memorable occasion (unless you drink too much in case you won’t remember it at all…).

It is Cheap

Often drinking abroad is much cheaper than drinking in your own country. This isn’t always the case, and if you’re drinking at the top of a high rise building in a tourist hotspot/center of industry then you might find yourself paying a little more. However if you’re somewhere like Bugaria or Krakow, Poland, then you’ll find that this is a great place to drink relatively cheaply.

You’ll Experience the Nightlife

And if you are in Krakow, or for that matter Amsterdam, Magaluf or Tenerief, then you’ll find that drinking is part of the experience and something that you should definitely check out. Don’t go to a party town and miss out on the opportunity to party!

Mathew has travelled the world and thinks beer is a great ice-breaker. Follow his recommendation, buy some great german steins; they make great gifts for beer enthusiasts.

Now counted as one of the world's most expensive cities, the only possible limit is the size of your wallet.

The Kremlin, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum and the Conservatory top most to-do lists, but there’s another Moscow — alternately ostentatious, hip, crass, beautiful, elegant, luxurious and fascinating — that all visitors to the city must see if they want to get a feel for what this place is all about. It is an all-night-party town whose days offer endless opportunities for those who can keep up. Now counted as one of the world’s most expensive cities, the only possible limit is the size of your wallet.

STAY
Le Royal Meridien National (007 495 258 7000, www.national.ru; £250). Often chosen by statesmen – the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, stayed here earlier this month – and overlooking the Kremlin, this Art Nouveau landmark has the best location of any Moscow hotel. There are panoramic views from the breakfast room and some bedrooms; avoid those in the dull new wing. There is an excellent concierge service – useful in Moscow.

STROLL
The Kremlin. Make sure you see its three cathedrals, whose walls are coated with richly coloured murals and icons, and the armoury, which is stuffed with memorable treasures such as Fabergé eggs containing miniature golden trains and ships. The armoury requires a separate ticket – on busy weekends, you might only be able to get in if you pay extra for a ticket combined with an audio guide (useful anyway, as labelling is limited). Indisputably, the prize piece of craftsmanship in Red Square is the 16th century St Basil’s Cathedral, which was built to commemorate a victory over the Tartars by Ivan the Terrible.

The most lavish of the metro stations. Two that stand out are Ploshchad Revolyutsii, where bronze figures glorifying hunting, farming, teaching and child-rearing are set into the arches to the platforms, and Art Deco Mayakovskaya, with murals of parachutists, ski-jumpers and planes in the ceiling recesses. A 10-ticket pass for the metro costs £2.80.

By strolling across Red Square. It is at its most atmospheric at night, when there are no tour groups. St Basil’s onion domes are perfectly outlined against the black sky and GUM, the former state department store that is now a fancy shopping mall, is lit up with fairy lights.

LUNCH
Cafe Pushkin for an ersatz slice of pre-revolutionary Russia. The café, which is really a five-star restaurant, is open 24 hours a day and is situated in a building that was renovated to look exactly like a Russian aristocrat’s home circa 1825. The staff speaks a beautiful, pre-Sovietized Russian (and English) and serves some of the best fare in town. You’ll want to get the blinchiki (Russian pancakes) with black caviar, borscht and pelmeni (dumplings), before moving on to the famous Tsar’s Sturgeon and, of course, one of Pushkin’s many, many desserts. Make sure your meal includes a spot or two or three of vodka. (Ruskiy Standart should do, or ask the waiter for a recommendation.) They treat you like you’re a member of the landed gentry here, and that’s because Pushkin is one of only a few dozen restaurants in Moscow that really understands service.

NIGHTLIFE
With its plethora of six-foot-one models, growing music scene and excess leisure time, Moscow has become a hub for high-end nightclubs.

Soho Rooms is Moscow Bing at its best while Krysha Mira has the best atmosphere. If you can get past the face control, or bouncers, you’ll have a wonderful time on the top-floor deck enveloped by supernatural blondinki, electronic music and the occasional fire-breathing dancer. Views of the Moscow River, the Stalin-era Ukraina Hotel and the White House, where Prime Minister Vladimir Putin runs the country, abound. The best way in is to make friends with a Russian who knows his way around this scene.

Other hot spots include GQ Bar or the more welcoming City Space Bar on the 34th floor of the Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy, which has 360-degree views over the city. For a more alternative bar, try Denis Simachev’s shop and bar.

AVOID
Setting off in a taxi without agreeing the fare first. Official and rogue cabs are out to fleece tourists. Bargain hard, bearing in mind that most city centre journeys should cost less than 500 roubles (£10).

Six musicians turned fashion designers develop their own fashion style

The world of pop music is filled with big personalities, personalities that want to branch out beyond music. For some it might be acting, for others art. There are also a few performers that turn their hand to fashion, with various degrees of success. Here are six musicians turned fashion designers with their own particular style.

Madonna – Surprisingly for a singer who has changed her look frequently, and clearly enjoys being a trend setter, Madonna has only comparatively recently launched her own fashion line. Material Girl was created with her daughter Lourdes, and is aimed at the tween market. The colours are bright, the fashions are fun. It’s clear that Madonna is lending her celebrity to promote the line, giving her daughter a proper business head on her shoulders.

Victoria Beckham – The world shook under the Girl Power juggernaut that was The Spice Girls in the mid 90s. As the band split, each member went their own ways. Initially, all five tried to stay in music, but that was not where Posh’s strength lay. A lover of haute couture, Victoria Beckham’s work to make her fashion line more than a celebrity vanity project paid off when she won Brand of the Year at the 2011 British Fashion Awards.

Kanye West – Although Kanye West is often very unspoken when it comes to his music, many fashion critics were expecting some of that expressiveness to reach the catwalk. That’s not to say that Kanye’s Dw collection didn’t impress, exploring ‘dark fantasy’ looks with strapped chokers and bondage boots shown at Paris Fashion Week in March this year. In fact, it looks like a good start for someone who is new to women’s fashion on an international stage.

Gwen Stefani – As ex-singer of No Doubt and solo star in her own right, Gwen Stefani is no stranger to the world of fashion. With her modelesque looks, designers have loved working with her, as she has incorporated high fashion with her own punky sense of humour. She took this further when she started the fashion label L.A.M.B (Love Angel Music Baby) in 2004. This is a line that’s very energetic, mixing a vintage sensibility with modern, and even futuristic, embellishments and design.

Liam Gallagher – With an undeniable 60s influence in both his music and style, it’s not surprising that Liam Gallagher’s fashion line, Pretty Green, would be heavily inspired by the era. You can see a mixture of tailored mod fashion and something of a student style that’s almost been knocked into shape. There’s a very British, very male look to Gallagher’s collections, experimenting with military camouflage for jackets, as well as the classic fitted polo shirt.

Travis Barker – Blink 182′s drummer, Travis Barker, has created perhaps one of the longest lasting celebrity-formed fashion lines, which was founded in 1999. Famous Stars And Straps (or FSAS) is a fashion line made for the punk and skateboard kids of the US. Its popularity has grown, however, as the t-shirts, jackets and accessories have been a hit with teens, as well as older men and women, all over the world.
INTERNATIONAL creative talent plays out across the Purbeck landscape this May and June to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Purbeck Art Weeks Festival (PAW)

INTERNATIONAL creative talent plays out across the Purbeck landscape this May and June to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Purbeck Art Weeks Festival (PAW). Between the 26 May and 10 June, highly-renowned classical musicians, award-winning composers and well-known authors are involved including Melvyn Bragg, BBC presenter Lucie Skeaping, Gabrieli consort & players, the Sacconi Quartet and Oscar-winning film composer, Stephen Warbeck.

The 16-day Festival is based around Purbeck’s talented visual artists. Throughout the two-week cultural celebrations over 50 talented local artists open their studios showing recent work directly inspired by Purbeck’s unique geology, flora and fauna.

The PAW Festival has grown substantially over the past decade. This year’s event celebrates an impressive cultural programme, encompassing visual art, music, talks and workshops. The ‘Purbeck Young Artists’ programme helps over 500 Purbeck school-children develop their artistic expression and exhibit work. The 2012 Young Artist theme is the Carnival of the Animals and the fabulous musical suite written by French romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns will be played by the young professional group YouTuba when the young artists’ work will also be on display. Their work will also be shown in Rollington Barn near Corfe Castle throughout the Festival.

PAW Musical Director, Natalie Clein, is delighted to lend her support, saying recently: ‘The PAW festival is designed to give an intense appreciation of Purbeck. It weaves a magic thread of excitement through individuals and communities; connecting the past and present and inspiring future possibilities.’

‘The Festival encourages young people to be adventurous and stimulates and informs the ever-growing national and regional audience drawn to the region.’

In 2012 the PAW Festival embraces an incredible line-up of musical and creative names. As a result of Purbeck’s artistic talent and star performers drawn to the region, many are noticing a blossoming St Ives ‘cultural-effect’ taking hold. Purbeck has long been a powerful source of inspiration for artists, musicians, performers and writers. The region has drawn key members of the Bloomsbury set and attracted the world’s leading painters and classical musicians. Nowadays a thriving arts scene is interwoven in the fabric of Purbeck life. This certainly is reflected in the performing artist line-up that sees the following sensational names take part in this year’s Festival:

The Brahms Horn TrioWednesday 30th May, 7.30pm, Lady St Mary Wareham
The lyrical Brahms Horn Trio will be performed by world-renowned classical musicians Miranda Fulleylove, Fergus McWilliam and Huw Watkins. These musicians are long-established members of leading orchestras and Fergus McWilliam (French horn) flies in specially from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for this performance of Brahms’ sensationally evocative piece.

The Honour of a Jubilee – music for British Kings and QueensSunday 3rd June, 11.00am, St James’ Kingston
The Royal Jubilee will be honoured on Sunday 3rd June at the splendid Victorian Church, St James’ Kingston, where international musicians, Mhairi Lawson (soprano) and Paula Chateauneuf (lutes), perform the mesmerising music from the courts of Elizabeth I, James VI, Charles I, Charles II and William and Mary, including Dowland and Purcell compositions. The church offers an intimate setting for this ravishing music.

Shakespeare’s Music of the SpheresMonday 4th June, 7.30pm, St Edward’s Church, Corfe
RSC and recording artist Martin Best is joined by BBC Early Music Show presenter Lucie Skeaping and their friends, to take PAW Festival-goers on a musical journey to The Music of the Spheres. Shakespeare’s ‘sweet power of music’ will be celebrated in readings, on original instruments with strings/wind/drums and by singers. This evening sequence has been specially created for the PAW Festival and promises to be an enchanting night where the listener can imagine themselves on Caliban’s ethereal island. Heavenly music by John Dowland, Thomas Campion and other 16th century composers will add to the delights.

Elvis McGonagallTuesday 5th June, 8.30pm, The Rex Cinema, Wareham
The 3rd annual PAW Festival Poetry Slam sees the irrepressible Elvis once again step up to the microphone and keenly take part. His rapid-fire couplets have made him a star of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Saturday Live’ and he regularly is featured on BBC Radio 7’s ‘Poetry Stand Up’ and on Resonance 104.4 FM. He lived in Corfe for many years.

The Gabrieli Consort & PlayersSaturday 7 June, 7pm St Mary’s Swanage
The Gabrieli Consort & Players are world-renowned interpreters of great choral and instrumental repertoire from the renaissance to the present day. The talented musicians are regular visitors to the world’s most prestigious concert halls. Under Director Paul McCreesh, the international ensemble will perform Handel’s Acis & Galatea: a delightful pastoral sung in English of the tale of two lovers torn apart by a jealous giant. Mhairi Lawson (Soprano) sings the role of Galatea, James Oxley (Tenor) as Acis and Alan Ewing as Polyphemus with other soloists and orchestra. Handel’s elegant music makes it one of his most popular works. It will be preceded by Handel’s Oboe Concerto no.3 and by pieces for recorders involving players from Purbeck and beyond. Earlier in the day, Gabrieli recorder player Rebecca Miles provides a hands-on recorder workshop for people of all ages, before they open the Gabrieli concert that night. The session is an opportunity for aspiring musicians to be involved with the internationally acclaimed Gabrieli and is provided thanks to generous funding from the Foyle Foundation.

The Stephen Warbeck Ensemble
This increasingly renowned young quartet which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, will perform: Mozart – String Quartet in D, K 575, Bartók – String Quartet no. 3 and Beethoven – String Quartet in C, opus 59 no. 3, Rasumovsky.

Everyone has a plain shirt just lying around. Admit it, you do too. Whether it be a V-Neck or a scoop neck, it doesn’t matter. Besides, plain t-shirts are essential if you are a raging fashionsita who loves patterns. If you are looking for ways to wear your t-shirt, you may have no idea just how versatile it really is, but there are so many looks that can be created around it. Now you’re interested, right? Read on to learn what your t-shirt can do for you!

The choices

If you are going out to lunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you can take your plain white t-shirt and pair it with a cute skirt. It will look great with a pair of tortoise shell sunglasses and a pair of Oxfords. If your shirt is plain white, try wearing some beige or a light tan with it for a classy look. No matter what color your t-shirt may be, you can wear it with a pair of skinny jeans. If you do this, pair a soft colored shirt with a pair of bright colored shoes, even heels, for that pop of color. Add some rocking jewelry and you’ll be ready to go. If you’re a wild fashionista, you may have a pair of leopard or zebra print leggings around and you may think you have nothing to wear with them. Hello! You have your solid color t-shirt. Add a cute leather jacket and some black pumps for a cute look. If you work in an office at the college in your spare time, you may dress up a bit. Did you know that your plain white shirt will look great with a pencil skirt, heels and a blazer? It can actually be quite a staple in that outfit! If you like the Bohemian style, you can wear your plain shirt with a pair of flare leg jeans and a kimono wrap shirt. Another way you can wear that amazing shirt is with a pair of cute denim shorts. You can wear flip flops, sandals or even sneakers with this outfit, depending on the look you are going for. The thing that is so great about having a plain white t-shirt, no matter how boring it may seem, is that you will be able to dress it up or dress it down. There are no limits to what you can do!

A wardrobe essential

You may think owning a plain colored t-shirt, especially a white one, may be really boring. You may think you won’t get much wear out of it, but the truth is that you can get so much wear out of one shirt. It can be worn with so many outfits. You can dress it up. You can dress it down. You can accessorize or you can go with minimal extras. No matter what you do, you will find that your plain white tee is the most versatile item in your closet!

Don't get tensed if you don't know what to do, where to go, how to get it done. Here are a list of hints that can help you to get set go!

Don’t get tensed if you don’t know what to do, where to go, how to get it done. Here are a list of hints that can help you to get set go!

Day Spa hint #1

I’ve had a embarrassing experiences before with my loud gurgles that made massager broke into a big laughter, I’ve broke wind and the most awful was while my first massage when the lady asked me to take off my robe and step onto the bed.

I was very worried I removed the gown and then got onto the table to cover my body. If I took just two seconds she would’ve left the room for a minute and come back later. Arghh.. that even now makes me really feel embarrassed.

Day Spa Hint #2

If I get a onetime therapy such as a back massage, facial treatments, manicure or pedicure I occasionally keep a few extra pounds for the massage therapist. In the United Kingdom hints aren’t expected which means you do not need to provide one. Once I visit a day spa I in no way offer a suggestion – I generally book everything through my credit card prior to my visit therefore I do not carry much cash with me. In other nations ideas are usually expected. You can request at the receptionist desk who will explain to you what the standard is. In the United Kingdom I’m frequently informed that if I want to provide a suggestion, feel free.

Day Spa Hint #3

There is absolutely nothing wrong with faking to be positive and if you do it for a long period, you’ll be assured. Everybody had to go through a spa their first time, therefore do not worry about it. Phone a buddy and locate a spa deal on-line at spa seekers.

Day Spa Hint #4

Try to go with a friend. Even when you are just heading for a therapy and not for a full day at the day spa you can go with a friend. This way you can talk about your treatment experiences later on and discuss the overall benefits of it.

Day Spa Hint #5

For newcomers, I recommend you begin with the Indian Head Therapeutic massage or perhaps a Facial. In each instance you will have to take your robe (or whatever clothing) off however can often have your bra on. Each treatment concentrates on only one area and they are fantastic for someone new to this pampering experience.

Day Spa Hint #6

Only the other day a friend of mine told me that he had been to a spa break in London. He experimented with a new therapy each day. I inquired him what he enjoyed the least.

His reply was a body wrap – evidently he was coated in grain, chick peas and olive oil and then covered by cling film. He said he felt claustrophobic and became irritated when the person left him wrapped up for about a 1/2 hour! I usually tell new Spa beginners to begin on something good so stay away from the body wraps.

The band have announced that they will be headlining a spectacular UK arena tour this coming autumn and will be joined by The Mission and Killing Joke.

Legendary band Legendary band The Cult are back with a powerful new album, Choice Of Weapon.

The band have announced that they will be headlining a spectacular UK arena tour this coming autumn and will be joined by The Mission and Killing Joke. Clearly not to be missed. I spoke with vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy about hitting the road again.

How does it feel to be headlining arenas again?

Billy Duffy: “We’ve been very conscious and mindful as a band to keep it fresh. If someone pays money to see Cult, we’re not going to pander to them but we’re not going to insult them by not playing the hits, but what excites me and Ian, and keeps us going, is the same thing that got us going in my bedsit in 1983 and that was sitting down and writing songs. We still have that childlike enthusiasm for the creative process. It’s absolutely vital for Ian. I enjoy it, but I’m a bit like a boxer who needs to get fit and back in the ring again. Ian has an absolute childlike wonderment for it, and I think that’s what’s kept The Cult going. We’ve made more good decisions than bad ones. We’ve always gone with our gut and our instincts and tried to be as honest as possible.”

Ian Astbury: “One thing I’ve steered clear of is looking in the rear-view mirror. We don’t do that it still feels fresh. I guess what you get after all this time is wisdom. When you’re a kid you’re definitely more impulsive. When you’re older, you hone your skills and you get to the place you wanted to be when you were a kid, as a writer and a performer.”

Have you got anything special planned for this tour?

Ian: “We’re putting a lot of time and care into our production and choosing the set list. It’s not like we’re imaging this as some kind of 80s revival show. I always watched Bowie and thought ‘How does he do it? How does he constantly redefine himself?’ and that always inspired me. He was my guiding star and I learned that it’s possible to be relevant and virile and powerful into your forties, fifties and sixties. In many ways you can use the cliché that this is the beginning of a new chapter. It shows our intention, of where we want to be and where we belong. I think we’re reclaiming territory. I think we have a little bit more of an intention to make an impact, a connection”

Billy: “In practical terms, we’d like to go deeper and play more obscure tracks, and we try every tour to dig up something that we haven’t played live before or for 20 years. This tour’s very much about the new material. When I go and see a band I definitely want to hear a couple of new songs and I don’t want to hear a band that’s just static and living in the past, but I also don’t want to hear an entire new album. I can enjoy that in the privacy of my own home! It’s about finding the right balance but it is a challenge. It’s instinctive. You take the emotional temperature of the year you’re in and feel that certain songs don’t feel right.

The current line-up has been together for six years now. How would you define the chemistry between the four of you?

Billy: “We’ve had a stable line-up with Chris Wyse and John Tempesta, and it feels like a band. It’s the most stable line-up we’ve ever had. Finding the right drummer has been an issue in the past, but it’s great with John. Me and Ian have got to survive and protect our baby, and our baby’s The Cult. It’s rare to find a songwriting partner and keep that thing going, so you have to be a little ruthless and protect that, unfortunately. But with Tempesta and Chris Wyse playing it feels right.”

Ian: “We never really had the luxury of having the perfect line-up before or recording with the line-up that we had on the road, where you get that special chemistry. You get that sixth sense when you play with people and we have that with Jon and Chris, that understanding. That’s what enabled us to go into the studio and make this new record. We’ve learned so much about each other. We’re in a similar psychic space to where we were on those early EPs, the Dreamtime album and the Love album. The world’s a similar place to how it was in 1984, so we’re picking up on that.”

The new album, Choice Of Weapon, sounds like a Cult album but with new ideas and diversity within your sound too. You sound energised. Is that a fair summary of where you guys are in 2012?

Ian: “This record is fresh. We’re a 21st century band. There’s a core in the culture where everyone’s focusing and we’re pushing our way back into that place. The only way you can do that, unless you’ve got a pretty face, is to have skill and talent and the ability to offer something as a performer. We’ve got something that’s worth fighting back into the room with.”

Billy: “I don’t have that objectivity about the record yet, but we feel great about it. It’s like a kid and you raise it and kick it out into the world and it ends up being either a good one or a bad one! Cult records are very seldom easy to make but I do feel that this one has a few great moments. It feels timely but it’s not at all contrived.”. The band have announced that they will be headlining a spectacular UK arena tour this coming autumn and will be joined by The Mission and Killing Joke. Clearly not to be missed. Unshredded spoke with vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy about hitting the road again.
